When a cow lies down on the ground, it supports 80% of its weight on the tripod - which consists of two knees and a hock. In nature, cows are provided with a soft cushion of grass. When a cow gets up, the depressions visible in the ground reflect the pressure on its knees and back. Concrete bedding indoors, covered with a thin layer of bedding, creates only a hard surface, often uncomfortably felt. Discomfort on concrete surfaces causes stress and limits the time spent in a lying position, which can affect the cow's milk productivity.
